Should we be still calling a mobile phone a mobile phone?
Yesterday I was looking at the specification of a device we have been asked to make for a client and I thought this does not resemble a mobile phone as we know it. In a recent report, making telephone calls on these mobile devices we carry around with us was placed fourth in order of what they are used for, I am sure most of us check our email on these devices more than we make calls!
It seems this piece of tech that we carry around with us everyday is becoming less and less about being a phone and more about being the vehicle that connects us to the world. It’s already a convergence of so many singular devices we used to carry. Camera, Compass, Torch, Calendar, map, Filofax!
Now we are seeing this is being pushed even more. Sensing and monitoring our health, our environment, our overall wellbeing, protecting us from danger, make sure we are compliant with our processes. This device is no longer a phone it is a part of us and our working and personal life.
Here are some of the specifications of a new device. Does it look like a mobile phone to you?
